I have my kit lens and do a senior portrait session tomorrow, what should I use?

I have a Sony Alpha A-330 and I'm doing my first photo paid work tomorrow. I have a 18-55mm lens and a 75-300 mm lens. What would be better for portraits? I understand that the 50 mm 1.4 or 1.8 would be better. I have not yet. It will be my next purchase. I have to work with what I have.

It depends on the type of portrait. Is this a half body shot, or shot head, total length. Do you want to keep the background in focus (because they are part of the theme of the session) or you want to throw the background out of focus and make the pop person off the page? Depends on what you want to do. Although you have had some suggestions on some focal lengths above for use as a "portrait" I shot you an example that is different. However, these two shots were not portrait photography. They are the picture taken during a competitive sport. I had no control over lighting, position, almost anything. These two photos were taken at different moments about an hour apart (Note the shadow of the wall), but the same individual. Both shots were with the same lens. Canon 70-200 f4 L (love this thing). if you can open in two different windows and put them over top of each other so you can switch between them. The first shot was taken at 70 mm f5. A portrait focal length. Http: / / i144.photobucket.com/albums/r174/hydedj/2010June13/Img0924.jpg The second shot was taken at 188 mm F4. A much longer deemed a vertical length. Http: / / i144.photobucket.com/albums/r174/hydedj/2010June13/Img1002.jpg stop f is effectively the same. The focal length is 2.7 times more. See what makes the background. (And you should choose a good background) Look at the seats behind him. With fuzzy that appears off the page. The first shot was on the road but the second did. (You should see this larger) was far from the person? Yes, but who cares. Results matter. (I have a 400mm F5.6 and make you a way back. But blur the background) Anyway, this is just an example of what can do. But everything depends on the idea of the branch. (No pun but I'll take it anyway) I made some dramatic photos with a wide angle. (But I'm not going to go get them) So any of your lenses will be good, but it depends on how you want to use. Consider making and what you want out of it. And then use the best tool to do so. EDIT I found a wide-angle photo. Not what I was looking for but good. 18mm wide angle as far as I'm concerned. The shooter is not funny because the focal length. Http: / / ~ O bunny21/August-2006/Img7695.jpg www.mts.net/ this in 17 mm. So http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r174/hydedj/2010June13/Img0128.jpg you can use wide angle too. But there must be a reason to select it. What else are you trying to show. Once again, back to the topic for the subject.
