Whistler Nocturne Blue And Gold

Friday, February 26th, 2010

James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American artist who spent most of his life in Britain. Whistler was an interesting contrast of subtle tones and touches in his work with a personality which was far more polarised and aggressive. The importance of Whistler is seen in those who have been influenced by his works since the 19th century which includes the likes of Tonalists, American Impressionists, William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargent. Whistler was also known for his key relationships with artists and writers of the time, including John Singer Sargent.

Whistler entitled many of his oil paintings with subtle tone-related names such as “arrangements”, “harmonies”, and “nocturnes”. Whistler is now seen as the founder of Tonalism, though this art movement has always been seen as less important than the developments of brighter, more vibrant methods like Impressionism who put a priority on colour choice.

Whistler went through the Ruskin trial before receiving commissions to create etchings in Venice with girlfriend Maud. Whistler was joined by John Singer Sargent. Sargent and Whistler got on well and enjoyed this spell in Italy. The two took the time to spread their name with other American artists settled in Venice such as Frank Duveneck and Robert Blum.

By the end of his career Whistler had produced many exceptional paintings in his enimatable style with the finest including the likes of and Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl, Nocturne: Blue and Gold – Old Battersea Bridge, Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother and Mother of pearl and silver: The Andalusian. Whistler moved to Paris in 1892 towards the end of his career and was at home in the company of artists such as Monet, Auguste Rodin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Stéphane Mallarmé. Here Whistler set up a large studio. At younger times he had been close to Pre-Raphaelite member Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He also was familiar with many of the impressionists, such as Manet and Degas. A futher link was through his lover and model in The White Girl, Joanna Hiffernan who also was used as a subject for Gustave Courbet.
