what's new in skating this month?
Im going to begin with a few of my opinions of how skating has had a bad rap in the press and media over the years and help get rid, hopefully, of some of these ideas.
Skateboarding is a pratice that has been in place since the begining of 1970's but it is amazing how much crappy vibe about it still circulates. It is time to eleminate some of these skating myths for good. Bear in mind that a lot of the articles you see out there, especially online is not 100% fact. In numerous cases it is opinion or it is something that people have heard a number of times that they believe it to bereal.
A skating myth that is finally quitting some is that skating is only for guys. While many of them are, more and more girls are taking part in it. They don't think what society says about it and they love the sport. The fact that there are some female skateboarders taking part in the serious competitions out there also provides them with some top notch role models also.
The idea about this is that individuals getting into in skating have not many goals in life. Many of skateboarders are top students also and they even take part in community fundraisers. But they don't get credit for any of that in the eyes of some people that wont see past the label that continues to stay.
Many people wonder why there are ideas in the works for skating parks and such around their cities. They don't understand any real importence for them because oflow numbers of people taking part in skating. The fact is that way more people would take part in it if such skateboarding parks were in place. It isn't weird for skateboarders to travel 30 or so miles if they need to in order to find one.
However, it doesn't get the recognition that it deserves for people to really take notice of that. It is estimated that close to 15 million people take part in this sport and that it should see an increase of about 3% annually for the next five years based on projection data.
-The Portland graphics studio Nemo has made a film that shows you a day in the life of photographer and Skatedaily.netfounder Bryce Kanights. In parts 4 and 5: Bryce takes you through a personal tour of his house and gives some old memories about his younger days skating with his SF crew The Sick Boys, his 1st years at Thrasher Zine and some thought into what skating means to him. Go get a cold one and grabe a seat this is one vid you wont't want to ignore.
-Completely earning it and doing it the correct way, Grant Taylor has been welcomed to the professional ranks by his skateboard sponsor Alien Workshop with a pair of signature decks.
You can catch both Ben and Ethan in the new video "God Save the Label" out now.
-After putting out their full length skateboarding video, the Sk8Mafia crewis now proud to present their newest AM video (including the entire squad) to view and download for free. That's right, get it straight from the Sk8Mafia website. Once you get past the long download period, there's lots of killer footage with Jamie Palmore, Tyler Surrey, Nick Tucker, Larelle Gray, Brandon Turner, Kellen James, Wes Kremer and new skater Marshall Heath.
-Finally ESPN really got it right. First check out the five min video clip and then dive into the lengthy written piece here
Both give a great, descriptive profile of one of the most creative skateboarders ever. While skateing is now covered by big films, co-opted by multi-national companies and grabbed for marketing research it's paramount to remember that talented, independent skateboarders like Ed make skating more than just a "sport".
